Great Pacific Garbage Patch seen by Google Earth
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge area of marine debris in the North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone. Contrary to popular belief, it is not one giant "trash island," but instead it is a section of ocean filled with floating pieces of plastic pieces. There is enough garbage there to cover almost 40% of all of the water on Earth. Much of the debris within this patch are small bits of float-able plastic debris. The name “garbage patch” is a misnomer. There is no island of trash forming in the middle of the ocean nor a blanket of trash that can be seen with satellite or aerial photographs. This is likely because much of the debris found here is small bits of floating plastic not easily seen from a boat. This has had a massive impact upon the ecology of the Pacific Ocean.
